Unplugged

I went away for a day and a half this weekend with one of my roommates. I'll admit at first it was hard to be away from my precious computer (aka connection to the world around me), but then I realized how quiet and still it was.

No noisy neighbors
No music
No podcasts
No phone ringing (except for a few texts)
Nothing.
I didn't even journal (gasp).
Just silence and lots of it.

Turns out being still and quiet isn't such a bad thing. I caught up on sleep, connected with my roommate, enjoyed a lengthy quiet time, reflected on God and His greatness by looking at His creation, played tennis, hiked a mountain, and took 5 hours to eat a fabulous dinner.

I'd forgotten how good it is to really rest and enjoy a true sabbath.

Note to self, take time to unplug more often!

Community Cup

I’m a germ-a-phobe, especially when it comes to eating or drinking after others. No really, I won’t try a sip of your drink from your cup or taste a bite of your food from your fork. I stress the extent of my phobia so you know how huge the next statement is for me.

I drank from the same cup that 4 other people drank from.

I was visiting a friend’s family when I first spied it,

A cold bottle of water, and one solitary glass.

I first convinced myself that it was their hospitality. They were only offering me, their guest, water.

No one else was thirsty.

Of course that was it.

My friend’s Sister poured a glass for her Dad.

Okay, okay, I was wrong. It was only Dad that was thirsty.

Amidst playing with the four month old baby I kept my eyes trained on the glass. In slow motion I watched my friend’s sister fill the glass and take a long drink.

No, no, surely it wasn’t happening.

She turned with a big smile and offered me the water that was left inside. I felt the parchness in my throat, felt the heat of my body rise, and smiled really big “no thanks.” I resisted from adding the lie that I wasn’t thirsty. Whew. My pulse returned to normal. I’d avoided the cup.

My relief came too soon.

My friend and I sat down a few minutes later to a late supper that was simple but delicious. No beverage was placed on the table. I hoped and hoped two cups would appear. I racked my brain ferociously. I’d been over for supper before, and each person had their own cup. I was positive of it. Would I have forgotten such an important detail in the glow of getting to finally be in someone’s home? No, no, I would remember something like that. “Calm down” I told myself, “it’ll be okay”. Besides, these are city people not village people, surely they’d offer you your own glass. Unless, (gulp) unless they felt you were like family, not a guest treated as special and different, but belonging to and accepting of their ways, one of them, to drink from the same…….
THUD
My friend sat the bottle of water and 1 solitary cup down on the table.
She smiled and dug into her food.
I smiled back, hiding the typhoon like storm occurring within me.
I started to eat the delicious food (simple fare of rice, stewed meat and potatoes, watermelon, helva, and of course the required staples of bread, tomatoes, and cucumbers). Eating the yummy food, my throat tingled a little.

I ignored it.

The minor tingle became an annoying scratch, a cry for the one thing I didn’t want to give it.

I looked at the glass on the table.

I set my fork down and with the look of one headed to the electric chair grabbed the glass and took a long swig.

Hmmm, that actually wasn’t so bad. I complimented the food while casually inspecting the glass. You know, I don’t think I even see any lip marks on the rim. I must’ve imagined others drinking from it first. Sure it looked like the same glass I’d seen Dad and Sister drinking from, but I’m sure it was a brand new glass, devoid of a single germ. I continued the self delusionary talks as I reached for the glass again…..bottoms up!

Exalt

Ex - alt
to raise high; elevate
to intensify, heighten
to glorify, praise, or honor
to raise in estimation or rank; to magnify

All of these are great definitions of the word exalt, especially when you use them in reference to God. Unfortunately that’s not how I most often use it. I find myself constantly having to confess the sin of thinking, worrying, or obsessing about a situation so much that I think of it more than I think of God.

I’m so worried about ________, or
I want to know ___________ right now, or
want an answer to _________ question so much that I fixate on it.

Like a dog to a bone my gaze can’t be diverted from the situation at hand. So much so, that I lose sight of everything and everyone else. My sights can even be set on good things, but I’m still focused on that thing, or that person instead of God. How easy and how subtle it is for me to quickly fall into that trap! Lord help me to EXALT the one thing instead of all the other things greedily vying for my attention.

Life Verse

I know people who have a life verse, a piece of scripture that God has spoken to them that somehow embodies their entire life. I’ve tried in vain to find one and it just hasn’t clicked. I thought of I Corinthians 10:13 for instance that talks about God providing a way of escape for you when tempted. As much as I quote that verse and love it, do I really want my WHOLE life to revolve around a verse talking about temptation…ehh, not so much.

So giving up and not feeling as spiritual as those "life verse people" out there, I quit the search.

So of course that’s when it happened.

My life verse, er chapter found me.

It’s one I’ve read many, many times and have always loved, but it’s gone to new depths since I moved overseas. At different stages since my arrival, different verses have spoken to me.

First it was the promise of God’s presence even here on “the far side of the sea.”

Then it was the assurance of His plan for my life, and that I wouldn’t die a moment before the days ordained for me were up.

During dark times, it was His light that made the darkness seem like light around me.

As I struggled with constantly being offended, I needed His light to show me the offensive ways in myself instead of constantly pointing the finger at others.

When I had trouble sleeping, it was knowing that He would give me sleep through the night and be right there next to me when I awakened that comforted me (what a beautiful picture of Father/Child or Bride/Bridegroom to know that HE IS THERE when I awake, having watched over me through the night…sigh sweet, sweet God).

And now as I contemplate the future and the next step, it’s His familiarity with my ways and thoughts, His hand that guides me, and His plan for my life that gives me peace and settles my anxious heart

Psalm 139
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

5 You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake, I am still with you.

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.

21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and abhor those who rise up against you?

22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Skin Deep Beauty

Every now and then I have to step outside of my box and do something crazy and risky. That’s my explanation for why I, a person with a fear of heights would go paragliding.

Yes I do mean paragliding, as in sailing through the sky at about 20,000 feet in the air attached to a parachute, a pilot, and nothing else.

The first time I went up was scary but fun. The second time I went up (yes I actually did it twice), I wanted to get over my fears and just have fun. Of course, that’s the time that something goes wrong, and the pilot and I have an “emergency landing” straight through a thorny tree mere feet away from huge boulders on the side of a mountain.

Things just went from bad to worse.

Fortunately I survived the crash as did my pilot, and 3.5 hours later I’d hiked through the forest, up the mountain side, and was back in the truck on the way home; exhausted, and clothing partially in shreds, but otherwise okay and alive! The next day I had bruises and scratches ALL over.

I think the last time I needed a band-aid was for a paper cut or hang nail.

So in some ways it was very surreal to have all these scratches all over my body. I’m not overly obsessed with my appearance, but I do like to look good, and I’m not particularly fond of scars in places I can’t or don’t want to have to cover up. Now, don’t get me wrong I’m grateful for every bruise and scratch, because as I look back at the pictures from the crash site; it could have very easily been a different story. I mean who crashes while paragliding and doesn’t even break a bone?

Anywho, as I began to look at my cuts and scratches God began to speak to me. I hate the scars up and down my arms and legs, but I can’t hide them. I’m sure that in time they’ll fade. But they’ll always be visible. I can cover them up, but in 100 degree temperatures, that’s not too practical.

So here I am with these scars.

They’re ugly, but a beautiful reminder of God’s goodness and salvation. And while they mar the smooth planes of my skin, I’ve gotten the opportunity to see, that they don’t make me ugly. I can still be beautiful. Funny how I’ve struggled almost my entire life with weight issues, and how ugly I feel because of excess pounds that are under my control to lose; but here I am with these scars that I’m powerless to erase and I feel that I can still be beautiful despite these unwanted markings.

I couldn’t stop them from happening,
I can’t make them go away,
I have to accept them and live with them.

But they are not me.

I am more than a number,
more than a few lines and scratches.
I am still beautiful.

Not because of my lips, eyes, nose, mouth or complexion, but because I am made in the image of God. My beauty comes from within. And by that I don’t mean my personality, but from my spirit. The human spirit God put in each of us that reflects Him.

Beauty that goes deeper than my insecurities,
my weight,
my flaws,
my scars.

Every Nation, Tribe, Tongue, and People

One of the fun things about living overseas is how your circle of friends looks so very different. You often get the opportunities to meet people from countries you literally have to pull out a map and look at to find out where they’re from. Sunday at our weekly fellowship we had people present from Denmark, France, Nigeria (yours truly), America, the Dominican Republic, England, Wales, and Germany. I think I take for granted the words “every nation, tribe, tongue and people.”

Do I realize just how vast that is?
Do I think of the incredible rainbow of colors, sounds, sights, and smells that is?

How GREAT is the One we serve. How deserving He is of praise from all nations of the world. Sunday I got chills just briefly thinking of what it will look like on that day to worship His Majesty with my brothers and sisters from around the world!

Word Games

My roommates and I ran into an acquaintance a few weeks ago. Immediately we noticed the neck brace she was wearing. We asked what happened and she said she’d gone with her neighbor to an amusement park for the neighbor’s birthday. Well apparently the ride was rather jerky and nearly everyone walked off holding their necks or backs. The girl said later she went to the doctor for the whiplash. As he was treating her, he asked what had happened. She didn’t know what the translation was for amusement ride so she said the word for game. The doctor continued treating her, then later asked in the conversation where she danced (and I don’t mean ballet either)……Um excuse me??? Apparently he’d gotten the idea that she hurt her neck dancing exotically in a game. She quickly corrected the misconception!

Busted

When you get to borrow a vehicle here, it’s like your life completely changes. You rush to do errands, buy heavy groceries, go visit places that are farther than you’d want to take a bus too, or you simply enjoy getting to and from work in 30 minutes as opposed to an hour or longer. It was for this reason that one of my roommates enjoyed the rare opportunity to drive to a different market and quickly get our groceries so the vehicle could be returned within the hour. As she pulled into a parking space she noticed that a woman had her car open and a stroller nearby. As my roommate parked and got out of the car, the woman became irate with her for nearly hitting the stroller (which she’d done her best to maneuver around). It turns out that there was a baby in the stroller. My roommate was glad for once to NOT be able to understand all that was being yelled at her. So she said I don’t understand while preparing to make a quick getaway. Without a pause the irate woman switched to English…….busted. Now if only the language barrier could’ve worked in her favor on that one!

Cooking from Scratch

I enjoy cooking. And it’s a good thing too, because coming from a Nigerian background if you want to have any hope of marriage; you better know how to throw down in the kitchen! I have to say though that my cooking knowledge base has expanded dramatically since moving overseas. Never one who likes monotony, I’d often try out new recipes on the family to spice up our hmmm, shall we say predictable food menu J However when you move overseas, depending on your location many things are no longer available to you. What? Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines don’t exist here??? And what do you mean you’ve never heard of break and bake cookies?

So rather slowly I began the process of learning how to do without staple spices and ingredients while discovering multiple ways to cook……an eggplant for example. At first I will admit it was a daunting task. Ever try to cook when you’re hungry? Not exactly the time to learn that it’ll take hours to cook ANYTHING because it’s all from scratch. No throwing together of frozen veggies and chicken breast here!

Then...........................I discovered online recipe websites.

Ohhh, the difference it made!

My favorite is allrecipes.com because it allows you to do an ingredient search. So say I want to make a dessert but I only have flour, sugar, eggs, and apples; then I can do a search for all the desserts containing those ingredients. To say it’s been a life saver would be an understatement. I can often be found in the kitchen with my computer whipping up a new dish……from scratch. There are of course some dishes that bomb (i.e. the charred chicken stock disaster that had our apartment smelling for a week). But overall, it’s been fun to learn new recipes. It also helps to have very supportive and non picky eaters as roommates!

Here are some of my favorite dishes I’ve made so far:

Peanut butter chicken (thanks Mentanna!)

Brownies (that could rival Ms. Crocker’s any day ;)

Peanut butter yogurt dip for apples

Chocolate mousse

Szechuan Spicy Eggplant

Garbanzo and Pinto bean salad

Chinese Roasted Chicken

Turkey sausage and white bean soup

Ginger veggie stir-fry

Chips and Salsa
Hummus

From London with Love

London is a city I will probably never live in, but love to visit. While I’ve been living overseas I think it’s become even more of this symbol of a place that’s still exotic and new, but enough like home that I can enjoy the ambiance without the stress of not being able to communicate. So of course, for my birthday (45 days and counting ;) I was trying to get a quick weekend away in London. I would see my cousin, get my hair done, do some shopping, and enjoy time away. Well, ticket prices were high, exchange rates were low, and while my heart (and hair) were screaming out GO, reason was saying wait. With reluctance I admitted that it just wouldn’t happen. I think the worst part was knowing that the drama of keeping up with my hair would again begin. Well as chance would have it, one of my friends just happened to have a friend coming to visit her here. Well wouldn’t you know that the lady coming just happened to be black. So the night before she comes, my friend calls me to tell me about her guest, and was there anything I needed her to bring…..um, like a whole entire black beauty store???? Ok, a little more reasonable would be black people shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil. At the last minute I added a PS that some Cadbury Flakes would be nice (a delightful chocolate candy bar made of thinly folded chocolate layers). I honestly didn’t have much hope for anything coming with her because it was so last minute. Sigh, God is so good. I couldn’t get to London so He brought London to me. Here are the goodies I received.

Thank you Rachel!!!!

True Love

Okay, I admit it, I’m a sucker for a good love story. I’m not talking about sappy I love you’s and an altar ending, but a “we’ve been married now for 30 years” kind of ending. Last night I got to have dinner with such a couple. I’ve known them for a while, but it was the first time I got to hear how they met. I had a goofy grin on my face as they told the details of the first glimpse, the long wait, the beginning of “us,” and other bits and pieces of their story. I found myself rushing ahead with questions, wanting to know details and needing more explanations. Yes, I am that girl.

Every story is different, yet I love them all. There’s just something beautiful bout how God can bring together two hopelessly flawed people, from two different backgrounds, cause them to be mutually attracted to each other, get married, and then through the highs, lows, and really low lows of life still be together decades later. Our God is so good. They way He brings people together gives me faith and hope. The way He keeps people together reminds me of His faithfulness. He is good!

PS I Love You

Sometimes God sends me post-it notes throughout my day. Just little notes to remind me of His love for me. Here are some I recently received.

a surprise phone call
a long email to catch up
an unexpected compliment
a free ride on a HOT day
a hug
a fun new recipe idea
making someone laugh
talking for hours with a good friend
being creative on and off the clock

At Last

It often takes me awhile to do things (read, I am a procrastinator), so of course I'm just now starting my own blog after thinking about it for a year :)
